In Canada, having a baby is a joyful event. This is also true for Senegalese women. But often, the conditions in which they experience their pregnancy and give birth lead them to face difficulties alone and not to receive help from a qualified professional when giving birth to their child.
In Senegal, five women die every day as a result of pregnancy. Only half of women are assisted by a qualified person during childbirth. Currently, many Senegalese women give birth at home in non-sterile conditions. One in nineteen children dies at birth and a third of infant mortality is due to infection at birth.
You can help debunk these statistics by supporting the Sénégal Santé Mobile Foundation in its project to equip three to five maternity wards which will provide a clean and safe place for Senegalese mothers to give birth to their child.
